Dialin Dial something in

Our mission

Your data should work for you, not for someone selling ads.

Dialin keeps what you notice and how it feels in a cloud that's yours. Here's what it costs, why, and the promises we keep.

Hi, welcome to Dialin. I wanted to introduce myself and talk a little bit about the project.

It's been a long time in the making, but really, AI [unclear]. I've seen a lot of really amazing tools being built with AI, but the gap was: how do you connect the tools you build to the real world? And second, is there an opportunity now for us to get around the powers that be and reclaim the power for ourselves?

So fundamentally, that's what Dialin and theuniversal together are about. How do you capture your data in a way that's meaningful, and then share that data with the rest of the world, in a way where the interaction, the transaction, is just you and who you want to interact with?

It's supposed to [unclear] businesses as well. They shouldn't have to cast a wide net, bothering all of us with ads, when they can connect directly, one on one. An airline can say, “Hey, we have an extra first-class seat. Let's give it to somebody.” That builds trust, loyalty, commitment, patronage. And it's really just an exchange of data that allows that to happen. We can do that everywhere. So capturing your data, and then exchanging your data, is the foundation.

The analogy I like to use, because it makes a lot of sense: think of your data as your car. It's what you're made of when you're traveling. You can put whatever you want in your car, and most importantly, you decide where you want to go with it. It's got a purpose.

GPS, though, is a system that knows all the cars. It doesn't have to know you. It doesn't matter what you put in your car, the songs you're listening to on the radio, or who's sitting next to you. Your car is your car. But GPS knows all cars from the outside. It also knows all the roads, traffic conditions and weather. That's what lets GPS help you get there.

And that's exactly how data ought to work. You capture who you are and keep it in your car, and you drive yourself, with some sort of protocol out there that [unclear]. God bless, everyone's really trying to solve the same problem, so that's the good part. But you should be able to own yourself, own your data, and then navigate the world. Let it all respond to you, instead of you having to respond to it.

When you say, “I want to go from here to here,” and you pull out your GPS, it does some pretty amazing things. First of all, you're the one deciding. And second, it's kind of helping you predict your own future. A GPS can tell you [unclear] in 18 minutes. If you have data about everything, maybe that's possible with data too.

I've spent my life wearing many hats. At heart, I'm an artist. And this comes from that need to give it all away, if you will. So please don't look at this as a business. I'm looking at it as more of a movement.

You own your car, so whatever tools you want to build, that's awesome. That's the era we're in, and it's amazing. But what we're going to have is this ability for you to exchange you, and that's not owned by anybody. Nobody owns all the roads, nobody owns GPS. That's the idea behind it, and that's what theuniversal represents. It's non-profit, [unclear].

Welcome. That's really what I wanted to say. I'm around, so ask any questions. We're setting up a Reddit, and obviously Twitter, or X. That'll be listed somewhere. See you online.

Where your data goes

Most free apps

You→their servers→ads and data deals

The app is free because what it learns about you is what's for sale.

Dialin

You→your cloud→only who you invite

Dialin is paid for by storage, so we have no reason to watch you.

What it costs

Why it costs this

Priced from our real cost

Storing 1 TB costs us about $8.30 a month, downloads included. Every plan covers its storage, even when it's full, so we never need another way to make money off you.

A little more than iCloud

iCloud and Google One charge less for the same space. They also run on ads, or on knowing you. The difference is what you're paying for: privacy, ownership, and what Dialin does with your data for you.

Always free

Making offers, earning points and theuniversal, the open marketplace, are free for everyone. The commons is never metered.

Businesses pay for tools

Places pay for the business dashboard, never for your data. Your data isn't for sale at any price.

Promises we keep

Never sold

No ads. No trackers. Your data stays in your cloud.

Never a copy

When you share, the other person gets a link back to your cloud, not a copy. Take the link back any time.

Take it all with you

Export everything, or delete everything, from your account, whenever you want.

Points aren't cash

We never pay for data. A point shows you were really somewhere: a place that knows you came back, a table held, an invitation.

Open where it counts

theuniversal is public and run as a non-profit. The Dial Dictionary is open to read and build on (developers).

They said it first

People who built the biggest companies in tech have said the same thing. None of them endorse Dialin.

“Privacy means people know what they're signing up for, in plain English, and repeatedly.”

Steve Jobs, D8 conference, 2010

“When an online service is free, you're not the customer. You're the product.”

Tim Cook, Apple's privacy statement, 2014

“We will continue to focus relentlessly on our customers.”

“Use Signal.”
